Anna Agnew was a wife and mother who experienced a breakdown mentally in her hometown in Indiana in the 1870s. She was confined at Seven Steeples—the Indiana Hospital for the Insane. The book, working from Anna's original accounts, details her treatment for what seems to have been a bi-polar disorder, despair and eventual release.
